Hessle dates back to the sixth century, and during Saxon times it was a place of political importance. The town grew during the Medieval era, and gradually became linked with its larger neighbour, Hull. The Hessle Feast began in the 1800s, and is a tradition that continues annually to this day.
The history of Hessle history is closely tied to ship building, beginning with a shipyard that built wooden boats, progressing to steel and iron ships. Although the shipyard was closed in 1994, it’s now a multipurpose space for business and scrap metal.
The Humber Bridge was built in 1981, breaking the world record as the longest single-span suspension bridge at the time, and linking Hessle with Barton-upon-Humber.

Although industry in Hessle historically centres on agriculture and shipbuilding, today it’s home to a number of big employers across a wide range of industries including the manufacturing firm Fenner and safety supplier Arco. Central Hull is just seven minutes away from Hessle by train or 15 minutes by car, making the journey a popular commuter route.
Travelling further afield, the journey from Hessle to York takes one hour five minutes by car or just over 50 minutes by train, while Leeds can be reached in one hour by car or train with a change in Brough. Scunthorpe is a 30 minute drive from the town, while Grimsby is 35 minutes away via the Humber Bridge.
