A quick history
Shepton is an Old English place name, but archaeologists have discovered artefacts in the local region dating back to and prehistoric times, along with a number of ancient burial mounds. The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, while the name ‘Mallet’ is believed to derive from a Norman family who lived in the area in the 12th century. Cloth making and wool trading became major industries in Shepton Mallet in the 15th century, and thrived over the centuries that followed.

Today Shepton Mallet has jobs across a wide range of industries including education, retail and business services. The town is home to Brothers Drinks, who make Brothers Cider, while other local employers include the Royal Bath & West Showground and Kilver Court Designer Village.
Things to do in the area
Shepton Mallet is located on the edge of the Mendip Hills, so it’s easy to enjoy a stroll or cycle ride in the great outdoors. In the town itself, there’s a designer outlet village, Kilver Court, along with a number of shops in the centre.
