  • Strathaven is a historic market town that grew close to an old Roman road. Historians believe Strathaven Castle, which is now a ruin, was built in the mid 14th century, while the parish church was built much later in 1772. 

    The town was given a Royal Charter in 1450 and grew significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries thanks to a thriving weaving industry. In 2002, Strathaven became one of the first Fairtrade Towns in Scotland, and today it’s a popular place for commuters to settle within easy reach of Glasgow.

  • Many residents in Strathaven commute to nearby Glasgow for work, where major employers include Celtic F.C., Scottish Power, Trespass clothing, Rangers F.C. and Clydesdale Bank. East Kilbride is home to the Inland Revenue, Hairmyres Hospital and the Department for International Development. Strathaven Ale is brewed in Craigmill.

    Strathaven has a charming town centre with independent shops, an auction market and cafes, ideal for relaxing mornings in the local area. The town hosts an annual Balloon Festival each August at John Hastie Park when colourful hot air balloons take to the skies in one of the only events of its kind in Scotland. 

    There are a number of historic attractions in and around Strathaven, including the ruins of the castle, the Arts and Heritage Centre and Drumclog Monument. If you want to learn more about local history, the Covenanters’ Trail takes you on a tour of the town’s historic sites.

    If you want to enjoy a breath of fresh air, you can take a walk alongside Avon Water to reach the Spectacle E’e Waterfall, or take a trip to Calderglen Country Park or Strathclyde Country Park. In the town itself, Strathaven Park has a miniature railway perfect for afternoons out with the family.

    Other attractions near Strathaven include the beautiful Chatelherault Country Park and Hamilton Park Racecourse, while the city of Glasgow is ideal for shopping trips and evenings out.

    Strathaven is well-connected by road, while the nearest train station is in Larkhall. Glasgow is a 40-minute drive away from the town, while East Kilbride can be reached in just 15 minutes and Irvine in 45 minutes. The journey to Edinburgh takes one hour 20 minutes by car.

    If you’re travelling to London, the drive takes six hours 45 minutes, while the train from Glasgow takes four hours 30 minutes. Glasgow Airport is a 45-minute drive from the town, with domestic flights to London taking one hour 15 minutes.
