Whether you’re shopping at independent boutiques, enjoying a round of golf or walking through the Cheshire countryside, the large village of Tarporley has lots for the whole family to enjoy. With good commuter routes to Chester, Crewe and Nantwich, a new home in Tarporley could tick all the right boxes for your next move.
A quick history
There is some evidence of prehistoric and Bronze Age settlements around Tarporley, but most of the town’s history dates back to Roman times when the high street was part of a major Roman road connecting Chester and Colchester. By the time the Domesday Book was put together, Tarporley was noted as a small agricultural settlement. It went on to suffer at the hands of the Normans during the brutal ‘harrying of the north’.
By medieval times Tarporley had grown into a farming town, and later during the English Civil War, there was a major battle in the local area between Parliamentarians and the Royalists who were occupying Chester. Today, Tarporley is a vibrant place to live with easy commuter links to nearby towns and cities.
Business and industry
Tarporley is a reasonably small place to live, with the main employers being Tarporley War Memorial Hospital and local retailers, but there are lots of big businesses only a short drive away. Major employers within commuting distance of Tarporley include credit card firm MBNA, Moneysupermarket and Marks & Spencer Money in Chester, the Pets at Home headquarters in Handforth, and Bentley in Crewe.
Things to do in the area
Tarporley is home to a large number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, mainly housed in the 18th- and 19th-century buildings lining the high street. If you want designer brands at reduced prices, Cheshire Oaks is a popular outlet village just a short drive from the town.
If you want to get out in the great outdoors, Tarporley is near the Sandstone Trail, a 34-mile-long walking route through the Cheshire countryside. The Macdonald Portal Hotel is home to a golf course and spa, perfect whether you want to relax with a leisurely round of golf or enjoy the sauna.
For families moving to Tarporley with young kids, there are lots of great places to take them for day trips in the local area, including Delamere Forest, Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium. The town hosts the Tarporley Carnival each year in July, with a parade, stalls and fairground rides.
Travel and commuting
Tarporley is located on the A49 and A51 and is well-connected to nearby towns and cities by car. Although there’s no local train station, nearby Chester has regular rail services to cities including Manchester and London.
From Tarporley, the journey to Chester takes less than 30 minutes by car. Nantwich is a 20-minute drive away, while Crewe can be reached in 30 minutes, Wrexham in 40 minutes and Stoke-on-Trent in 50 minutes. The car journey to Manchester takes just over one hour.
If you’re travelling to the capital, the journey to London takes around four hours by car depending on traffic, while the train from Chester takes just under two hours. Manchester Airport is only a 40-minute drive away.
