Welcome to Connah’s Quay

Located in Flintshire, North Wales, Connah's Quay is a town near the border with England, just a short drive from Chester. The town is situated alongside the River Dee, and with plenty to see and do in the local area, along with good transport links by road and rail, Connah’s Quay has become a popular place to set up home. So whether you enjoy walking through ancient woodlands, taking day trips to the beach or simply getting to know a new community of people, Connah’s Quay may be the place to find the perfect home for you.

A quick history

Connah’s Quay dates all the way back to 11th century, when it was a tiny village of just six homes as recorded in the Domesday Book. For centuries the settlement stayed very small, but as the docks became busier with trade and train lines to Holyhead were built in the 19th century, the town grew and grew. Although it became a thriving railway town, by 1950 both the docks and the railway were almost closed. Today Connah’s Quay has a community of more than twenty thousand people, making it the biggest town in Flintshire.

Businesses and industry

Historically, Connah’s Quay was known as a trading port and railway town, with industry including boat building and fishing. Today the town’s industry centres around education at Deeside College, energy production at the Connah’s Quay Power Station and steel at the Tata steelworks in nearby Shotton. Deeside Industrial Park is also located close to the town, and is home to a number of small, medium and large businesses including the headquarters for Iceland Foods. Work on the enterprize zone Northern Gateway is also underway, the largest private-sector development of its kind in North Wales.

Things to do in the area

From your home in Connah’s Quay, you’ll be within easy reach of local sites and attractions within the wider Flintshire area. If you enjoy a Sunday afternoon stroll, the ancient woodland Wepre Park is a great place to spend a few hours walking, before exploring the 13th century remains of Ewloe Castle. Other places to look out for in the town include St Mark’s Church, Top-y-Fron Hall, St David’s Church and Flintshire Bridge which crosses the River Dee.

For days in the great outdoors, Flintshire is home to a number of hiking routes and pathways, including Halkyn Mountain, Talacre Beach, the Clwydian Range, the North Wales and Dee Estuary Coastal Path, and Offa’s Dyke. Other popular things to do in the local area include child-friendly visits to Danger Point interactive centre, walks through Greenfield Valley Heritage Park and a leisurely round at Mold Golf Club. Connah’s Quay is also located on the National Cycle Network, ideal for family adventure days.

Travel and commuting

Connah’s Quay is located just off the A494 which goes through Deeside and links with the M56 to Manchester with a journey to the ‘capital of the north’ taking around 1 hour by car. Liverpool is even closer, at just 35 minutes away by car travelling via the A550 and A41. The town is also close to the A55 which runs all the way to Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast.

As for public transport, although the town doesn’t have its own railway station, you can catch a train from Shotton Station which is less than 5 minutes away from Connah’s Quay by car. From Shotton, you can travel by rail to Wrexham, Chester, Warrington Bank Quay, Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly.  For international travel, the nearest major airports to Connah’s Quay are Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester, with both airports offering flights within the UK and across the world.
