Buy second-hand

Redecorating your house often means several trips to furniture shops and homeware stores, but don’t feel pressured into buying everything from new. By buying second-hand, from places such as Gumtree, Ebay or Freecycle, you’ll not only save a few pennies but will also bring a unique sense of style and history into your home’s interior.

Update what you already have

If you hate that old chest of drawers or want to throw out the big mirror, before you do anything take some time to stop and decide whether you can give it some new life with small, inexpensive updates. From new drawer handles to a lick of paint, there are plenty of ways to repurpose existing furniture and give it a much needed lease of life.

Don’t be afraid of contrasting colours and patterns

When redecorating, it’s all too easy to get caught up in planning matching colours and patterns - but an overly considered interior can sometimes feel too ‘put together’. Instead, be guided by styles and tones that you love, and be bold in throwing them together to see what happens!

If in doubt, go big

One of the biggest mistakes people make when redecorating their homes is buying a rug that’s too small for a room. Instead of floating in the middle of your room, a rug should be big enough to tuck underneath your bed or sofa, giving the illusion of space and tying your interior style together like an interior design pro.

Embrace texture

Another easy way to bring professional interior design touches into your new house is by embracing texture. From soft cushions to lightweight curtains and rustic tables, go for a mixture of textures to bring creative flair into your space.

Think outside the box

Try looking online at Instagram, Pinterest or Houzz for inspiration and to see what other people have done to their homes. If you’re into your DIY, have you ever considered that a wooden step ladder can be a great shelving unit, or that a vintage teapot can be a plant pot or vase?
