To help get your search started, we’ve chosen five of our favourite places for a family day out in the South West.
Brunel’s SS Great Britain
Designed by engineering colossus Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the SS Great Britain was a pioneering vessel which became the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic in 1845. It put in more than 40 years of service and is now one of the South West’s top attractions in the form of an innovative museum permanently moored in Bristol. Your children will love stepping aboard to get a taste of Victorian life aboard a historic ship, experiencing the sights, smells and sounds of the life the sailors would have led.
Eden Project
Not far from St Austell in Cornwall, the Eden Project is another of the region’s top attractions. A place where your kids can learn a thing or two while having plenty of fun, this famous eco-friendly attraction is known for its futuristic greenhouses brimming with thousands of different plant species from around the globe. From rainforest walks to rides along the longest zip wire in England, this is a must-visit for nature-loving families.
Stonehenge
If your children are fascinated by historical attractions, they’re going to love Stonehenge. The mystery surrounding this prehistoric monument on the Salisbury Plain is the stuff of legend, which you can explore in detail when you visit this iconic site. You could also combine your trip with a stop in nearby Salisbury, where you can see the famous Magna Carta at the city’s cathedral.
Jurassic Coast
Going even further back in time, you can step into the age of the dinosaurs with a trip to the Jurassic Coast. A place where young imaginations can run wild, your little ones can also keep their eyes peeled and fixed to the ground to try and spot some ancient fossils. The coast stretches for some 95 miles between Exmouth and the Old Harry Rocks in Dorset, with highlights including Durdle Door, Durlston Country Park and Lulworth Cove.
